SEATTLE, Wash. – Long Beach State Women's Soccer began their first road trip of the year, but a slow start from LBSU helped Washington take down the Beach as two early goals for the Huskies led the way to a 3-0 win for Washington from Seattle.
Washington (2-0-1) controlled the action early against Long Beach State (1-2-0). The Huskies earned an early chance as Samiah Shell hit a ball off of the post. Jadyn Holdenried then had the breakthrough in the 13th minute on a header from a cross by Alex Buck. Off the restart, the Huskies were able to get the ball back and found Kelsey Branson to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beach rallied quickly as Cherrie Cox forced Washington goalkeeper Tanner Ijams into a save, pushing the ball into the crossbar for Long Beach State, but nothing came of the ensuing corner for LBSU. Washington then added a third goal in the first half as a long shot from outside the box by Lucy Newlin found the net to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Both teams settled in during the second half, with Long Beach State putting up three shots to Washington's five. Jordan Candelaria had a solid effort on goal that was saved by Ijams in the 60th minute. Aurora Schuck also made a spectacular save in the closing minutes to help maintain the margin.
Long Beach State will continue their road trip to the Pacific Northwest, facing Portland on Sunday at 1 p.m., with live coverage on ESPN+.
