No. 11 Beach Volleyball Opens Best in the West With Win Over Stetson

The Beach went 1-1 on the first day in Laguna Beach.
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. - No. 11 Long Beach State won their first dual 3-2 over No. 14 Stetson but dropped a close 3-2 match to No. 4 Stanford in the first of two days of competition at the Best in the West Tournament.
In the first duel against Stetson (19-8), Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah quickly put a point on the board for Long Beach State (16-10) as they beat their opponents in straight sets. Demi Wagdy and Megan Widener held their opponents to nine points in the first set and won a competitive second set. The dual clinching point came from the third flight pair of Skyler Germann and Natalie Glenn. The duo dominated in the third set, as Germann grabbed back-to-back aces to guide them to victory.
The first flight pair again grabbed the first point for the Beach but Stanford (20-7) answered back with a win at the third flight. The duel was tied as Stanford gained a 2-1 advantage with a win at the second flight. A battle at the fourth flight went the way of the Cardinal as they clinched the dual. The fifth flight pair of Mahala Esser and Tineke Hinton came back from being down 14-11 to tie the third set at 14-14. The lead went back and forth until an ace from Hinton gave the Beach match point. Esser put the ball away to grab the last dual point for Long Beach State.
The Beach will return to Laguna Beach tomorrow to face North Florida at 9 a.m. and No. 6 Cal Poly at 10 a.m.
