LBSU Beach Volleyball had two big wins to finish the Best in the West.

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State started the day with an upset of No. 6 Cal Poly and finished with a 4-1 win over No. 16 North Florida to close their time at the Best in the West tournament.

Long Beach State (18-10) defeated a tough Cal Poly (20-3) team in the first match of the day. Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah continued their dominant weekend in Laguna Beach by grabbing the first duel point. The fifth flight answered back with a point for Cal Poly. The second flight also went to the Mustangs but Megan Widener and Demi Wagdy had a straight set win of their own. With the duel tied 2-2, all eyes were on the third flight pair of Natalie Glenn and Skyler Germann. The pair took the first set 22-20 but dropped the second. The third set saw them up 3-0 before Cal Poly could put a point on the board. Germann and Glenn were down 10-7, but put together another run to tie the set at 10-10. The duo grabbed two more points to inch closer to the end. Natalie Glenn tagged the back line to win the set 15-12 and take the duel for the Beach 3-2.

The Beach came out swinging in their second match of the day against North Florida (17-4). The top three flights took care of business with straight set wins. The third flight clinched the duel as Demi Wagdy and Megan Widener were competitive at three different flights this weekend. The fifth flight pair of Mahala Esser and Tineke Hinton took the first set and won a back and forth second set to take the duel 4-1.

The Beach will head to Alki Beach in Seattle to compete in the Husky Invitational this weekend.
