Kyle Ashworth and Reid Montgomery both post two hits for LBSU
HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i defeated Long Beach State 10-5 Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Dirtbags took the lead in the top of the second on a two-out Reid Montgomery chopper over the head of UH. Third baseman Kedren Kinzie plated Connor Charpiot.
Jared Quant doubled with one out in the bottom of the second. He went to third on a Draven Nushida infield single. Kinzie's opposite-field single through the right side tied the game. Kellan Montgomery's first pitch to Hunter Falido was low. LBSU catcher Conner Stewart dug the ball up and threw down to second, where he picked off Kinzie for the second out. Montgomery struck out Falido to end the inning.
Alex Champagne walked with one out in the top of the third. With two outs, Matt Toomey's opposite-field double down the left field line gave Long Beach State two runners in scoring position. Charpiot was intentionally walked to load the bases and bring up Trotter Entright. Enright grounded out to short on Itsuki Takemoto's first pitch.
Shunsake Sakaino appeared to have reached on an infield error to begin the bottom of the third, but upon further replay review, the call was overturned for the first out. Jordan Donohue reached on an error. Matthew Miura walked. Ben Zeigler-Namoa doubled to the right-centerfield gap to score two for a 3-1 advantage. Kamana Nahaku reached an infield single to give the Rainbow Warriors runners on the corners. Jared Quandt's blooper to left plated the third run of the inning. On a ball low to Nushida, Nahaku broke for third, and he was ultimately called out for running out of the baseline. Nushida's opposite-field single to left field advanced Quandt to third. Kinzie's 4-6 fielder's choice wrapped up the frame.
Stewart struck out to begin the fourth but reached on a Takemoto wild pitch. Reid Montgomery's second opposite-field single to left of the night pushed Stewart to second. Kyle Ashworth reached on an infield single to third to load the bases. Takemoto struck out Nathan Cadena and Champagne for the first two outs. Armando Briseno cleared the bases to tie the score with a double to left center. Sebastian Gonzalez relieved Taekmoto and struck out Toomey for the third out.
Falido reached on an error to begin the bottom of the fourth. Kellan Montgomery recorded the next two outs before Miura singled to center to return the lead to the Rainbow Warriors. Montgomery struck out Zeigler-Namoa for the final out.
Nahaku walked to begin the Hawai'i fifth. Kinzie singled with two outs to move Nahaku to second. Pinch-hitter Jack Salmon reached on an error that allowed Nahaku to score. Sakaino lined out to center to keep it 6-4.
Miura singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth off Long Beach State reliever Tyler Gebb. With the count 1-0 on Zeigler-Namoa, Miura stole second. Zeigler-Namoa walked. Nahaku also walked on a 3-2 count to load the bases. Quandt was ruled out on an intentional fly to shortstop. Gegbb struck out Nushida for the final out.
Briseno walked to lead off the sixth. Pinch-hitter Luke Taylor grounded out to second, which allowed Briseno to head to second. Isaiah Magdaleno relieved Gonzalez to face Charpiot in a right-right matchup. Up 0-2 in the count, Magdaleno walked Charpiot. Jake Evans grounded into a double play to quiet the threat.
Hawai'i scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-4. Cadena opened the top of the ninth with a double down the left field line. Champagne grounded out to second as Cadena took third. Briseno's sac fly scored Cadena. Taylor singled with two outs before Charpiot grounded out to end the game.
Ashworth and Reid Montgomery both recorded two hits to lead the Dirtbags. Kinzie, Quandt, and Nushida each charted three hits to pace the Rainbow Warriors.
