ASU breaks the game open with a 7-run sixth
PHOENIX— Arizona State defeated Long Beach State 11-1 to begin a two-game baseball series Tuesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Conner Stewart's single started the top of the third for the Dirtbags. Kyle Ashworth's chopper to first resulted in an infield single and a pair of base runners. Alex Champagne's sac bunt was successful as Stewart and Ashworth moved up a base. Nathan Cadena's sac fly scored Stewart for a 1-0 Long Beach State lead. In his first start back after an injury, Armando Briseno flew out to center for the third out.
Evans walked to lead off the top of the fifth. Stewart sacrificed Evans to second with a bunt. Jonah Giblin, the second ASU pitcher of the game, struck out Ashworth looking on three pitches. Champagne grounded out to first for the final out.

The 6-8 freshman walked Vu to begin the bottom of the fifth. Kahalekai struck out Contrades. Vu stole second with the count 0-1 to Compton.
At 0-2, Kahalekai attempted to pick off Vu at second. His failed pick off attempt ended up in centerfield, sending the ASU runner to third. Kahalekai struck out Compton. Isaiah Jackson gave Arizona State the lead, hitting a 2-2 Kahalekai fastball over the right field fence. Brody Briggs popped out to third to end the frame.
Landon Hairston doubled to the left-center gap with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Matt King, who entered the game hitting .416, hit an opposite-field double down the right-field line to score Hairston. Tobias reached on an infield single as King advanced to third.
