The Gauchos came away with the win between the two programs after the Beach started the tournament with two victories in the last two days.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a matchup between two ranked programs, the top seed, No. 32 UC Santa Barbara held off Long Beach State as a strong run in the Big West Championship came to a close Saturday for the Beach.

After a late start, delayed three hours due to rain in the area, action got started as UC Santa Barbara (15-8) were able to snap the doubles run from Long Beach State (16-6) at the Big West Championship. Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco Martinessi led in the top flight, but wins from Lucy Lu and Lily Pradkin along with Raphaelle Leroux and Anna Weisshiem gave the point to UC Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos then closed out the match with three wins in singles. Weissheim was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Costa in the second flight, Emma Tutoveanu won 6-2, 6-3, and Leroux closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Daria Malaescu.

The loss closes up the tremendous Long Beach State career of Jenny Hilt-Costello, who has announced her retirement at the end of the season. After 28 seasons at the helm of the program, Hilt-Costello closes her career with 429-202 overall record, winning nearly 70% of her matches and leading the Beach to nine regular season Big West titles and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.
