Beach Volleyball Sweeps Pool Play To Start Big West Championship

(2) Long Beach State beat both (7) Sacramento State and (6) Cal State Bakersfield 5-0 to start the tournament.
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Long Beach State Beach Volleyball went unbeaten in pool play to start the Big West Championship, defeating both Sacramento State and Cal State Bakersfield 5-0 to secure the top seed in Pool B.
No. 10 Long Beach State (25-11) beat (7) Sacramento State (7-18) to start their time at the championship. The first flight pair of Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah held their opponents to under ten points in each set. The second flight pair got the win for Long Beach State with the fifth flight pair securing the sweep. Tineke Hinton and Mahala Esser finished their straight-set win with a service ace from Hinton.
Long Beach State grabbed their second sweep of the day over (6) Cal State Bakersfield (11-23). Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah win their 94th match at Long Beach State in a 22-20, 21-11 victory in the top flight, passing Nicci Reinking for the most career wins at Long Beach State. The only third set in the day came from Haley Carrington and Julia Westby, who closed out the sweep with a 21-23, 21-16, 15-3 win with a dominant final set.
Long Beach State will face the winner of tomorrow's second match at 12:15 p.m.
