Beach Volleyball Wins The Big West Championship

LBSU Beach Volleyball won their second Big West Championship in program history.
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State finished off a championship season, their second in the last three years with a 3-1 win over No. 6 Cal Poly, the top seed entering the tournament.
The Beach (27-11) started the final day of the tournament by winning a 3-0 match against third seed Hawaii (14-21). The fourth flight pair started the match with a dominant win over Hawaii, holding their opponents to 13 points in both sets. The second flight pair of Haley Carrington and Julia Westby sealed the deal for Long Beach by getting a straight set win over their opponents.
Long Beach State battled Cal Poly (29-6) in the final. The fourth flight again got a dominant win to get the first point on the board. Cal Poly answered back with a straight set win at the second flight. The fifth flight of Mahala Esser and Tineke Hinton got the second point on the board as they maintained control of their match and pushed the Beach to a 2-1 dual lead. The championship point came from Megan Widener and Demi Wagdy. Widener made a statement kill to win a competitive third set.
The win secures the automatic berth for Long Beach State into the NCAA Championship, as the Beach will make their fourth NCAA Championship appearance and third in a row, competing next week in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
