Long Beach State scored in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to rally for a 4-3 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State showed plenty of resilience on Saturday, as the Beach didn't lead until the final swing of the bat but battled back to score one run each in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to walk off 4-3 winners to earn a critical series win against UC Riverside.
UC Riverside (19-25, 10-11 Big West) ace Maddie Heinlin, who held Long Beach State (21-19, 11-10 Big West) to just three hits in the nightcap yesterday, once again had the early number of the Beach, facing the minimum through the first thee innings as the early momentum went the way of the Highlanders as a close play at the plate was overturned, and Makayla Medellin was ruled out after reaching on an error in the second inning.
Capitalizing on that momentum, the Highlanders took their first lead of the game in the third. Eta Lauti walked and Kamryn Davis reached on a bunt single to put two runners on, and after getting moved over, a two-run single by Trendee Kahunahana put UCR on top 2-0.
Long Beach State's veterans would finally solve Heinlin and give the Beach a chance. Jacquelyn Bickar hit her second triple of the series to open the fourth, scoring on a double from Corissa Sweet, and then Sweet scored on an overthrow tagging up from second on a deep fly from Medellin to tie the game.
That was short-lived, as Davis doubled to start the fifth, and an error put two on with no outs. Freshman Brynne Nally entered in relief for the Beach and picked up big outs, not allowing a hit as one run scored on a sacrifice fly, working out of the bases-loaded jam with just one run coming home to score.
Nally would set down nine Highlanders in order through the next three innings giving the Beach a chance to rally. Medellin opened the seventh with a single, and after moving to second on a wild pitch, was efficiently moved to third with a bunt and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Brooklyn Lee to tie the game.
After a clean top half from Nally in the eighth, the Beach went back to work with the top of the order. Bickar singled for her second hit of the day, stole second, and scored easily on a base hit from Carly Robbins as Long Beach State finished off a 4-3 victory.
Long Beach State will get a road test on Tuesday, facing No. 5 UCLA from Easton Stadium at 6 p.m. before a road series over the weekend at Cal State Bakersfield.
