Jada Cecil threw a no-hitter for the Bruins as the Beach couldn’t get the bats going on Tuesday.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State suffered their second run-rule loss of the season, falling 9-0 on the road at No. 7 UCLA in a midweek contest from Easton Stadium. Senior Jada Cecil threw a five-inning no-hitter for the Bruins in the defeat.
UCLA (42-7) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Savannah Pola got the Bruins started with a bloop single to right field, and then a comebacker put two on for UCLA. Megan Grant then lifted a double into the gap just inches over the glove of KaLeena Gonzales for a 1-0 lead, and a sacrifice fly from Kaniya Bragg added one more. The first truly hard-hit ball of the inning added one more on a single from Alexis Ramies and UCLA led 3-0 after the first.
Brynne Nally entered for Long Beach State (21-20) in the second, and worked a quick second inning before the Bruins added one more in the third inning after two walks to start the fame. Long Beach State threatened as Brooklyn Lee was hit by a pitch and Corissa Sweet walked to put a runner in scoring position, but after a threatening ball just left of the foul pole from Priscilla Iniguez, Jada Cecil was able to close out the Beach in the top of the fourth.
With the Beach changing pitchers for a second time, this time to Lindsey Cowans, Pola got the Bruins started again with one out. Three hits scored a first run, and with the bases loaded, a single up the middle from Sofia Mujica scored two more. A passed ball kept the inning going on a strikeout, and the Bruins made the Beach pay, scoring a run on the play to take an 8-0. A bases loaded walk added one more before Maddy Martin was able to get the Beach out of the inning.
Jada Cecil retired the side in order in the top of the fifth to close out the no-hitter and the complete game shutout.
The Beach will remain on the road, taking on Cal State Bakersfield in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader from Bakersfield on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for Noon on Friday.
