
Forster, de Castro Piera Finish One/Two Again As Men’s Golf Wins Wyoming Cowboy Classic

Charlie Forster broke the school scoring by three strokes, finishing the tournament with a 196, 20-under par.
MARICOPA, Ariz. – Led by Charlie Forster and Alejandro de Castro Piera who finished as the individual champion and runner up, Long Beach State Men's Golf claimed a second tournament victory, pulling away in a dominant third round to win the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

Forster claimed his second win of the season in dominant fashion, setting a new Long Beach State record with a 54-hole score of 196, 20-under par for the tournament. After a first round 67, Forster closed the second round in early morning action Tuesday with a 65 and was one better in the final round, finishing with an 8-under 64 with nine birdies and an eagle on the Par 4 14th on the way to the win.
The senior was six strokes in front of Alejandro de Castro Piera, who finished the tournament 14-under par with a 202 that was also a Top 10 score in program history. Long Beach State owned the14th today, as the junior also had an eagle on the way to a final round 66. The next closest competitor was five strokes behind de Castro Piera, and 11 strokes behind Forster to demonstrate how dominant the day was for the duo. Tuesday marked the second time this season the pair finished one/two, having done so in the team's other tournament championship this season at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate.
"What a massive week for the whole team," said head coach Rob Murray. "Working together to set a team record is an amazing accomplishment. Charlie's individual record of 196 speaks for itself, and great play from Alejandro who would have won on any other week. The boys ultimately played eight rounds in seven days. They worked so hard this week and I'm so happy for them that they get to enjoy this one."
Jack Cantlay climbed eight seven places with a third round 71 after finishing the second with a 70, ending the tournament at one-under par overall. Steen Zeman's two-under 70 in round two went towards the team score, as did Krishnav Chopraa's final round 75.
As a team, Long Beach State finished the tournament with an 827, breaking the program's best mark vs. par in program history at 37-under set earlier this year at Lake Las Vegas, and tied for the third lowest 54-hole score in program history. The Beach closed the tournament 14 strokes in front of second place Iowa State, and were the best team in the 23 team field from Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course.
Long Beach State's win is the 33rd team win in program history, and the second this season. With two wins in one campaign, the 2024-25 team joins just six others with multiple wins in a season, including the last two seasons under Murray.
Following the victory, Long Beach State will next prepare to defend their title at the Big West Championships which the Beach has won in each of the last two seasons, and three out of the last four. That tournament begins on Sunday, April 28 at La Quinta Country Club.
