Long Beach State rode the long ball to a game two win after falling in extra innings in the opener.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – In a long day of action at the Matador Diamond, the two teams just got in two full games of action, with Long Beach State rallying but losing in extra innings in game one before riding two home runs from Brooklyn Lee and Makayla Medellin to a game two win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Malayna Terrones had the big hit as Long Beach State (15-11, 5-3 Big West) started the first game with the lead. Jacquelyn Bickar walked to start the inning, and after a single from Makayla Medellin put two on, a double from the sophomore Terrones played two as the Beach took a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Kate Barnett worked three clean innings, but CSUN (12-14, 5-2 Big West) broke out for a big inning in the fourth. The Matadors put two on with a pair of bloop singles, and the inning slipped away from the Beach starting with a throwing error on a bunt trying to advance the runners, scoring the first run of the game for CSUN. The Beach got a popup for what looked to be a key early out, and got another grounder but electing to go for the lead runner kept the bases loaded. That decision would hurt the Beach, as a station-to-station single tied the game, and two more singles plated three more as the Matadors took a 5-2 lead over Long Beach State after four innings.
Medellin led a rally for the Beach in the top of the sixth inning. The junior ripped a lineup through the left side, and a double from Rebekah Durazo put two runners in scoring position with no outs. An RBI groundout scored Medellin, and then a sac fly from Terrones scored one more as LBSU cut the CSUN lead to one at 5-4.
The Beach got production from the bottom of the lineup to turn the order over and give the Beach a chance in the seventh. Pinch hitter Lina Apodaca, and then Carly Robbins reached on an error fielding her sacrifice to put two on. With runners on the corners, and RBI groundout from Medellin then tied the game at 5-5.
Reagan Jackson made a fourth circus catch in right field to extend the game, stealing a go-ahead hit at the wall from Priscilla Iniguez with Sweet in scoring position in the top of the eighth. That paid off for the Matadors in the bottom of the eighth, as CSUN pushed across a leadoff walk with a game-winning single from Tiara Westbrook.
For the second straight game Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead. Medellin reached with her third hit of the day, and with one on, Brooklyn Lee smashed a two-run home run to left, her second home run of the year. That put Long Beach State on top 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
The Beach tacked on two more in the top of the third with the top of the order again. Bickar drew a leadoff walk and Medellin smashed an opposite field home run to right, doubling the lead to 4-0.
CSUN finally scratched across a run against Haddad in the fourth inning. Tiara Westbrook hit a leadoff double, and the Matadors brought home the run with a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. The Matadors pushed another run across in the bottom of the fifth following a leadoff walk from Larissa Flores, chipping away some more.
Long Beach State battled back with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Terrones and Sweet both singled to put two runners on, and Iniguez followed with another single to give the Beach an insurance run with a 5-2 lead.
Medellin came through with her fifth hit of the day, a double to start the seventh inning, and then scored after an error and an RBI single from Brooklyn Lee. Iniguez then followed with another hit to push the lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh.
A two-run home run from Westbrook made those insurance runs count in the bottom of the seventh, but Haddad finished off the contest in front of the long shadows to even the series.
The teams will decide the series with a final game coming from Matador Diamond on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
