Beach Softball Splits Two Games On Final Day Of The Louisville Slugger Invitational

Long Beach State crushed LMU before losing a tight game with Pittsburgh to close the second home tournament of the year for the Beach.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State closed out Loyola Marymount in six innings to grab a third win on the weekend before losing a one-run game to Pitt to finish the Louisville Slugger Invitational.
It took a couple of innings for the Long Beach State (9-7) offense to get rolling against Loyola Marymount (8-14), but senior Shannon Haddad held ground for the Beach in the meantime. Haddad finished a complete game, striking out four and allowing just three hits while only allowing one runner to third in the game.
Meanwhile the Beach threatened in the first and second but broke through in the third inning. Jacquelyn Bickar singled to start the inning, and Carly Robbins was plunked to continue the frame. Malayna Terrones singled to right to bring home a pair of runs to give the Beach an early lead.
The Beach pushed around a third run in the fifth inning with the RBI coming on a single from pinch hitter Makayla Medellin.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Beach closed out the game with a mercy walkoff win. Robbins and Terrones each singled to start the inning, and Rebekah Durazo with her third hit of the game scored the first run of the inning. A walk to Corissa Sweet loaded the bases, and back to back doubles from pinch hitter Alyssa Aguilar and Medellin scored four more runs to end the game early.
In the second game of the day, Long Beach State's starter, freshman Maddy Martin held Pitt hitless through the first three innings, and threatened with multiple runners in the second and third, but couldn't cash in the chances and Pittsburgh (10-10) punished the Beach for a miscue in the fourth.
Martin picked up the first out of the inning, but a hit batter was followed by a slicing double down the right field line. A grounder looked to help the Beach out of the inning, but an overthrow in the pickle allowed one run to score, and a second scored on an RBI groundout that would have ended the inning, giving Pitt a 2-0 lead with just one hit.
The Panthers were efficient once more in the fifth, as Kylie Griggs singled to start the inning, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on a second RBI groundout to put Pitt on top 3-0.
Long Beach State battled back. Durazo drew a one-out walk in the bottom half, and came around to score on an RBI double from Medellin. Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Beach threatened once again. Durazo again got the action started with a double, and Brooklyn Lee followed with a hit to put the tying run in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Medellin brought the Beach within one, but Kyra Pittman finished off the win, keeping the Beach off the board with one final out. The Beach ultimately left 11 on base to Pitt's five in the defeat, outhitting the Panthers nine to three.
With the end of the tournament, Long Beach State closes the main portion of the non-conference schedule, and will turn their attention to Big West play starting next week on the road at Hawai'i.
