Long Beach State Drops Opening Game Of Big West Play At Hawai’i

The Rainbow Wahine took an early lead and never trailed in the series opener.
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Hawai'i pushed two runs across in the first inning and led the rest of the way as Big West play opened for both teams in a 6-1 defeat for the Beach. Sophomore Avery Weisbrook hit a solo home run for Long Beach State, who out-hit the Rainbow Wahine but fell in the first of three games from Honolulu.
Long Beach State (9-9, 0-1 Big West) had a pair of singles in the first inning, but couldn't cash either in and Hawai'i (15-8, 1-0 Big West) took advantage in the bottom of the first. Shannon Haddad struck out the leadoff batter, but a walk and a single put two on, and then two more walks brought in the opening run of the game. A sacrifice fly scored one more and UH lead after one, 2-0.
Haddad settled in, not allowing any more walks and putting down six of the next seven while the Beach continued to threaten. Corissa Sweet singled to open the second inning but was thrown out at the plate on a double from Selena Perez, and then Jacquelyn Bickar was stranded after a leadoff double in the second.
The Beach finally cut into the lead, trailing 2-1 after a solo home run from sophomore Avery Weisbrook, her first of the season. Hawai'i answered with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then pushed three runs across in the fifth, the big hit coming on a home run from Liliana Thomas.
Long Beach State would ultimately out-hit the Rainbow Wahine 7 to 6, but Addison Kostrencich kept the damage to just Weisbrook's home run and finish off the complete game win for Hawai'i.
The two teams are scheduled to finish the series on Saturday, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. PT with live stats available at www.beachlivestats.com.
