Long Beach State Takes 3-of-4 Big West Weekly Track & Field Honors

Flores, Wharry, and Lavershina are honored for their Challenge Cup performances
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Members of the Long Beach State track and field team took three of the four Big West weekly honors the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Tristyn Flores was named Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Flores broke the Long Beach State record in the 100m by running 10.26 at the Mar. 15 Challenge Cup. The previous mark of 10.29 was run by Brent Gray in 2007. Flores returned later in the meet to take home the 200m title by going 20.98. Flores was part of the LBSU 4x100m relay that won the race in a time of 40.34. His 10.26 is the fastest time in the 100m in Division I this season while his 200m mark is the fourth-quickest in Division I.
Canaan Wharry was selected Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Wharry won the Challenge Cup title in the discus with toss of 184-1. Wharry threw the hammer a career-best 192-1 to earn third-place at the Challenge Cup. Wharry currently ranks second in Division I in the discus (188-0, Beach Opener) and 17th in the hammer (192-1).
Sofia Lavreshina was chosen Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week. Lavreshina swept the 200m and 400m races at the Challenge Cup. She won the 200m in a time of 24.43 before taking home top honors in the 400m by running 54.59. Lavershina also competed on LBSU's 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay teams during the Challenge Cup. The 4x100m was third while the 4x400m relay finished second. She is currently second in Division I in the 400m (54.59) and third in the 200m (23.92, Beach Opener).
Long Beach State returns to action when the Beach sends athletes to both the Oregon Preview and USC's Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
