Long Beach State has opened league play with two straight series wins.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – UC San Diego evened the series with Long Beach State with a ton of offense in game one on Friday, but the Beach responded with a big effort of their own to grab the series win at home by splitting the doubleheader with the Tritons.

Playing the opener through a steady, light rain, both teams were quiet offensively through three innings as Brynne Nally allowed just one hit through three, but UC San Diego (3-18, 1-5 Big West) broke through in the fourth inning. Jaden hill started the inning with a double, and after an error plated the first run, a double from Lexi Hermosillo added one more, and a two-run home run from Alexa DeMarse put the Tritons on top 4-0. The Tritons then added three more runs in the fifth, with the big hit coming on a two-run single from Zara Wasserman to set UC San Diego up with a 7-0 lead.

Long Beach State (13-10, 4-2 Big West) pushed across Carly Robbins after a one-out triple in the sixth and threatened again in the bottom of the seventh. Malayna Terrones started the inning with a  single, and Makayla Medellin doubled the sophomore home, but the rally ran out of steam in an 8-2 defeat in the opening game.

Long Beach State recovered quickly with a great start to the second game. Eryka Gonzales, making her first start of the season, worked a quick first inning while UCSD starter Callie Christian did not. Christian hit Jacquelyn Bickar and Rebekah Durazo while walking Makayla Medellin. A groundout led to one out at the plate, but two more walks scored a pair of runs and marked the end of the day for Christian. A sacrifice fly and an error brought home two more runs as the Beach batted around and took a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Going back to work in the second, back-to-back doubles from Medellin and Durazo scored another run, and then Terrones with her second hit of the day scored Durazo to make the score 6-0 after two.

UC San Diego would chip away with lone runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but sophomore catcher Brooklyn Lee smashed a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field with Bickar and Medellin on to help Long Beach State pull away for good in the 9-4 win.

Long Beach State will remain at home for one more game, hosting Northern Colorado on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
