Long Beach State scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, singles from Malayna Terrones and Rebekah Durazo got a rally started and clutch hits from Brooklyn Lee and Avery Weisbrook ended it, as an RBI double from Weisbrook put the Beach in front of Omaha for a 3-2 win.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Malayna Terrones got the Beach going with a single to start the inning, and Rebekah Durazo followed with a hit to right. An error trying to throw out Terrones got away from the Mavericks, and she went on to score on the play.
Brooklyn Lee followed with a double to score Erica Estrada, running for Durazo and tying the game at 2-2 with no outs. Omaha (13-4) retired two to nearly escape the jam, but Avery Weisbrook doubled to left to score Lee and give the Beach the 3-2 lead.
Sophomore Kate Barnett gave Long Beach State the opportunity to win the game from the circle with her efforts before and after the big inning for the Beach. Brynne Nally got the start for Long Beach State, but was lifted after some command issues led to four early walks. The Beach worked around that trouble, but Omaha would push across a run in both the fourth and fifth innings against Maddy Martin to take a 2-0 lead.
Barnett shut down the rally in the fifth with three straight outs, and closed out the sixth and seventh innings as well, striking out one and allowing just one baserunner with a hit batter in her three innings of work on the way to the win.
Long Beach State, now 2-0 at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, will try to finish the weekend unbeaten with two more games tomorrow. Long Beach State is scheduled to host Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. before closing the tournament by hosting Pittsburgh at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
