Long Beach State went pitch-for-pitch with the defending national champions for 11 innings, but the Sooners finally broke through for a 2-0 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of a sold-out crowd on a beautiful day in Long Beach, Long Beach State softball hosted No. 2 Oklahoma in the home opener for the Beach and the two teams battled through 10 scoreless innings before the Sooners finally punched through in the 11th to take the win.
After recognizing Oklahoma (6-0) head coach and Long Beach State Softball alumnae Patty Gasso prior to the game, the action quickly kicked off with the Sooners getting the early action. A double and two walks in the first inning loaded the bases, but Selena Perez turned a double-play to get Long Beach State (3-1) out of the inning in the first jam of the day.
Oklahoma loaded the bases in the third inning as well, but Brynne Nally struck out Nelly McEnroe-Marinas to end the threat once again. A diving catch in center field from Makayla Medellin ended the fourth inning.
The momentum started to turn in the fifth inning. After two one-out walks, Cydney Sanders hit a single to left field, but a great throw from Jacquelyn Bickar easily got the lead runner at the plate, and a fourth strikeout from Nally ended the inning.
Freshman Maddy Martin made her debut in the circle for Long Beach State starting the sixth, and would pitch the rest of the game for the Beach in a great performance as pitching continued to dominate.
Senior Jacquelyn Bickar walked and was stranded in the fourth inning, but the Beach finally got their first hit in the bottom of the seventh. A double play ended the threat for the Beach, but Martin would retire eight straight for LBSU as the Beach continued to have baserunners, threatening to walk off the defending champs.
Lina Apodaca worked a leadoff walk in the eighth, and Perez singled to start the ninth, but the shortstop was doubled off to end the threat. After a quiet tenth, Oklahoma earned a one-out walk, and a double from Abigale Dayton got the first run on the board in the eighth. One more single scored Dayton, and the Beach had one more runner on, but Isabelle Smith closed out her thirdwin of the season with 4.1 innings of work for the Sooners.
Long Beach State enters into an extended homestand, playing their next six games from the LBSU Softball Complex. That homestand begins Tuesday at 4 p.m., when the Beach will host Winthrop on ESPN+.
