With the tiebreaker rule in effect, Winthrop was able to end a deadlock 1-0 in eight innings.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Brynne Nally and Kate Barnett combined to hold another opponent scoreless through regulation, but the Beach couldn't break through with a big hit and Winthrop scored in the eighth inning to steal a win at the LBSU Softball Complex on Tuesday.
Pitching was in total command for both sides on Tuesday night. Long Beach State (3-2) turned to Brynne Nally for the start, and she was excellent, retiring six straight to start the game and striking out four over four innings for the Beach. Winthrop (3-2) answered with Megan Powell, who would go the distance, striking out eight and giving up four hits on the evening.
The Beach threatened early, as Lina Apodaca led off the bottom of the first with a single, and a second hit and a fielder's choice left runners on the corners, but Powell worked out the jam and was in command the rest of the way.
Sophomore Kate Barnett entered for the Beach in the fifth, and was equally efficient, allowing just two hits and striking out two as the zeros continued to pile up.
Long Beach State's best chance came in the sixth, as Makayla Medellin opened the inning with a bloop single and Erica Estrada walked to put two on. An attempt to bunt both runners over was popped up, however, and a critical strikeout by Powell was followed by a groundout to end the threat. A hit batter and a single put two on for Winthrop in the top of the seventh, but Barnett picked up a key strikeout of her own before groundout to end the inning and the teams would head to extra innings scoreless.
With Winthrop flying out tonight, the tiebreaker rule was in effect, and with a runner on a double from designated player Mili Watts scored Emma Roberson to score the only run of the game. In the bottom half, a clean bunt quickly moved Apodaca to third, but the freshman was stranded there as the Beach couldn't push the run across and Powell finished off the eight-inning complete game for Winthrop.
Long Beach State's initially scheduled game against San Diego Wednesday night has been postponed due to a threatening weather forecast. The Beach is scheduled to begin the first of two tournaments this season running Thursday through Saturday at the LBSU Softball Complex.
