Haddad, Robbins and others get the Beach a win to start the Louisville Slugger Invitational.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Shannon Haddad allowed just three hits while striking out a career-high seven batters and Carly Robbins and Rebekah Durazo both had a pair of hits as the trio of seniors helped Long Beach State get off to a great start at their annual home tournament, the Louisville Slugger Invitational with a 4-1 win over Utah Tech.

Haddad worked around two baserunners in the top of the first inning against Utah Tech (7-11), and then Long Beach State (7-7) grabbed the lead courtesy of courageous play from the top of the lineup. Jacquelyn Bickar kicked off the bottom of the first with a single, and Carly Robbins followed with another hit to put two on. Moved to second and third, a wild pitch brought home one run as Bickar scored and the Robbins scored all the way from second after capitalizing on an overthrow, putting the Beach on top 2-0 after the first inning.

Utah Tech answered back with back-to-back hits in the second inning, as a triple from Sadie Gardner scored Baylee Howley for the first and only run of the game from the Thunderbirds.

Long Beach State grabbed an insurance run in the second inning, as Priscilla Iniguez worked a leadoff walk. An error put runners on the corners, and more solid baserunning paid off for the Beach with a double steal to plate a third run.

That would be plenty for Haddad, who did not allow another hit over the remaining five innings on the way to the win, striking out a season-high seven on the way to her third win of the season.

Robbins would add one more insurance run, scoring a second time after opening the fifth with a hit and coming home on an RBI single from Brooklyn Lee to push the score to 4-1.

Action continues at the LBSU Softball Complex with five more games as part of the Louisville Slugger Invitational. Long Beach State will take part in the morning, facing Omaha at 11:30 a.m. in the day's second game.
