Maxwell directs balanced Long Beach State attack in straight-sets victory over Rainbow Wahine
LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Long Beach State defeated the University of Hawai'i in straight sets Friday night before a national TV audience on ESPNU at the Walter Pyramid.
A blistering 9-0 run powered Long Beach to control of the opening set as the Beach rolled past Hawai'i, 25-16, in the first frame. Trailing 6-5 early, the Beach flipped the momentum behind Madi Maxwell, who sparked the decisive surge from the service line. She delivered two service aces and set up a string of kills from Logan King, Sidney Hamaker, and Elise Agi as the Beach surged ahead 14-5. The run forced a Hawai'i timeout, but the Beach tacked on another point before the Rainbow Wahine finally broke the streak.
Maxwell finished the stretch with multiple assists and two aces, including one that clipped the back line for a 13-5 advantage. King and Agi combined for four kills during the run, while Long Beach State's block and serving pressure kept Hawai'i out of system. The Rainbow Wahine trimmed the deficit late, but the Beach's early cushion held as King put away the set at 25-16 with a cross-court kill.
Hawai'i opened the second set with a 4-0 lead and held off a late Beach surge before the Beach closed strong to win 25-23. The Rainbow Wahine started fast with back-to-back kills from Miliana Sylvester and Cha'lei Reid, followed by a service ace from Victoria Leyva to force an early timeout. After settling in, Long Beach State stayed within reach, but Hawai'i maintained a slim edge behind a string of kills from Reid and Bri Gunderson to lead 13-10.
The Beach responded with a 4-0 run highlighted by a block from Maxwell and kills from Agi and Nieko Thomas to take their first lead at 16-15. Hawai'i regained the advantage briefly on a block from Tyla Reese Mane and Sylvester, but Maxwell keyed another Long Beach State rally with a kill and a service ace during a decisive 4-0 burst to make it 20-17. The Rainbow Wahine closed to within one at 23-22 after Reid's solo block, but the Beach sealed the set on a kill from Rhiann Sheffie.
The Beach completed the sweep in convincing fashion, closing out the match with a 25-19 win in the third set. LBSU seized early momentum with a 6-2 start behind kills from King and Sheffie, plus a service ace from Anna Jelinek. Hawai'i struggled to find rhythm, committing a handful of service and attack errors that kept Long Beach State comfortably in front.
Despite trailing by as many as five points, the Rainbow Wahine found a spark midway through the set. Reid and Mane combined for back-to-back kills to trim the deficit to 13-10, but the Beach's frontline, led by Thomas and Agi, turned back multiple attacks to push the margin back to 18-13.
Hawai'i made one final push out of a timeout, cutting the lead to 20-17 on a block from Mane and Gunderson. The Beach quickly answered as Sheffie's kill extended the lead, and Agi sealed the win with consecutive kills off Maxwell's sets to close out the 25-19 set and the match.
Long Beach State was led by Agi, who recorded 11 kills, seven digs, and four blocks. Maxwell posted her 10th double-double of the year (in 18 starts) with 27 assists and 11 digs, adding a match-high three service aces and two blocks. King finished with 10 kills, seven digs, and two assists. Reid led Hawai'i (6-12, 2-5 Big West) with 10 kills.
