Comeback Comes Up Just Short As Women’s Volleyball Edged At CSUN

Long Beach State forced a fifth set, but CSUN held on for the win in Northridge.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After dropping the first two sets on the road at CSUN, Long Beach State rallied with two excellent sets to force a fifth, but a slow start in the final set allowed the Matadors to hang on for a 3-2 win over the Beach.

Logan King had a fantastic match for Long Beach State (14-6, 7-2 Big West), finishing with 21 kills on .581 hitting and playing a major role in turning around the match in the third and fourth sets.

In a tight first set, neither team had a lead larger than three points in a great tone-setter for the match. CSUN (12-8, 5-4 Big West) opened up an early lead at 3-1, but the Beach pulled back even at 10-10, and the rest of the set was a thriller. Tied at 20-20, CSUN took the lead on a kill from Hailey Brockway, and then took a 22-20 lead on a block from Iye Okolo and Julia Bazylevych. The Beach was unable to chip into that lead, and the Matadors took a 25-23 first-set victory.

Riding that momentum, CSUN had their best set of the match in the second. Holding Long Beach State to just five kills and negative hitting, the Matadors pushed a 7-6 lead to 11-6 with four straight errors from the Beach, and went on to grab a 25-14 win in the second set.

Long Beach State rallied in the third. CSUN pushed a 9-7 lead to 12-7, but the Beach battled back. An ace from Madi Maxwell helped spark a push to 13-11 with a Logan King kill, and a block by Nieko Thomas and King put the Beach in front 16-15. Continuing to find King, who finished with seven kills in the set, the Beach moved in front 23-20 and closed out a 25-21 win to extend the match.

With the momentum now in Long Beach State's corner, the Beach hit .556 in the fourth on the way to an easy 25-14 win. Logan King had six kills with no errors in the set, and Elise Agi added four on .667 hitting as the Beach made just one error in the set. The Beach pushed from 8-7 to 12-7 and then to 16-9 on the way to the win.

A service error for the Beach followed by a Bazylevych ace helped turn things around for the Matadors in the decisive fifth, as CSUN started the set on a 4-0 run. Long Beach State recovered to cut the lead to 6-5 on a kill from King, but couldn't pull all the way back, and the Matadors held on for a 15-11 win in the fifth to close out the match.

Long Beach State returns home to the Walter Pyramid, hosting Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
