
Jagare Advances As Long Beach State Begins ITA Southwest Regionals

Long Beach State will have three competing in the Main Singles Draw beginning Friday.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Thea Jagare won two matches in qualifying on Thursday to advance to the main draw in singles, highlighting the day for Long Beach State.
A sophomore, Jagare won a close match with Peyton Duckett of Grand Canyon to begin the day, splitting two sets before convincingly winning a ten-point tiebreaker to decide the match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2. She then dominated in a match against Ada Piestrzynska of Loyola Marymount, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the main draw.
Johanna Hiesmair also claimed a qualifying victory on Thursday. In another tight match that went to a third set tiebreaker, Hiesmair rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 win over Julia Visaya of UC San Diego, but fell to Teja Tirunelveli of San Diego State in the final qualifying round by another third set tiebreak.
Those were just some of the close matches for the Beach on the day. Paulina Franco and Pamela Badillo were both knocked out through a third set tiebreaker, while Daria Malaescu dropped a first set tiebreak in a defeat to Arizona's Zoya Chulak. Seeded Kayla Chung of UCLA eliminated Daisy Carpenter in the other first-round qualifying match on Thursday.
Main draw play for both singles and doubles is scheduled to begin on Friday morning from San Diego. All eight players will be competing in doubles, while Jagare joins Cecilia Costa and Diana De Simone, who received byes into the main draw in singles.
