Women’s Water Polo Faces No. 18 San Diego State To Open The Triton Invite

Long Beach State will play four matches total in San Diego.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State will head to San Diego for the Triton Invite hosted by UC San Diego this weekend. The Beach will open the tournament facing No. 19 San Diego State on Friday at 5:20 p.m. at the Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The Beach (2-4) comes from a tough weekend of competition as they faced four Top 10 opponents, dropping the contests against No. 9 Fresno State in overtime, 15-14, No. 1 UCLA, 12-7 in the first day of the Cal Cup. On the second day of competition, Long Beach State fought hard against other two Top 5 opponents falling to No. 4 California, 16-11 and No. 2 Stanford, 14-7.
The Spanish duo of senior Martina Cardona and junior Elisa Portillo combined for 34 goals leading the Beach in the season, with Cardona netting 19, eight assists and eight steals while also winning over 80% of the sprints. Portillo added 15 goals, nine assists and five steals so far in the season.
During the weekend at the Cal Cup, Cardona led the Beach scoring 12 goals, where six of them came against the Bears to set her new career-high for Long Beach State, one of them being her 100th career goal. The lefty also added four assists and four assists while also winning five sprints during the weekend. Sophomore Charlotte Echlin added a career-high of 12 saves against the Bulldogs to help the Beach take the game to overtime after being three goals behind with five minutes left.
The first opponent of the Triton Invite for the Beach will be No. 18 San Diego State. The Aztecs (2-2) opened their season at the ASU Invitational where they defeated No. 22 Cal Baptist, 19-16 and Cal Lutheran, 21-7 while dropping a close contest against No. 21 UC Davis, 13-11 and falling to the hosts No. 7 Arizona State, 19-13.
San Diego State is led by sophomore Mimi Stoupas with 12 goals followed by Claudia Valdes and Makenna Macedo, both with 10 goals in the season. In the cage, Tiaare Ahovelo and Ava Ratajczak split time to help the Aztecs in defense with 22 and 17 saves, respectively.
The remaining matches of the tournament will be decided throughout the tournament depending on the results of other matches. The Beach will face either No. 6 UC Irvine or No. 22 California Baptist for their second game on Saturday morning.
