The Beach will face four Top 10 teams in two days.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 8 Long Beach State will face four Top 10 opponents this weekend as they travel to Berkeley, Calif. for the Cal Cup. On Saturday, the Beach will face No. 9 Fresno State and defending National Champions No. 1 UCLA. To close the weekend, Long Beach State will face the hosts No. 4 California on Sunday morning and play No. 2 Stanford to wrap the weekend.
The Beach (2-0) opened their 2025 season hosting the Beach Invite last Saturday with wins over Azusa Pacific, 18-4 and Concordia, 23-8. Senior Martina Cardona, junior Elisa Portillo and true freshman Jermonie Billinglsy all scored seven goals each to help the Beach on offense. Senior Chelsea Oliver added 12 saves and surpassed the 500 career saves mark, while sophomore Charllotte Echlin added nine saves against APU and junior Charley Edler collected six against the Golden Eagles.
Long Beach State will head to the Cal Cup with a strong schedule. In the first match of the tournament the Beach will face Fresno State (2-1). The Bulldogs hosted the Polopalloza last weekend, defeating No. 14 Michigan, 16-14 and No. 14 UC San Diego, 14-9 but dropped the contest against No. 4 California, 13-10. After facing Fresno State, the Beach will battle the 2024 National Champions UCLA. The Bruins have yet to play as they dropped of the Polopalloza due to the L.A. fires. Looking for another title, No. 1 UCLA has a strong roster with the addition of junior Ana Beatriz Mantellato who transferred from Hawai'i in the Fall.
To close out the weekend the Beach will face No. 4 California (3-0) in expectations of a good match up. The Bears ended as National runners up the past season after dropping to UCLA in the final of the NCAA Championships. The last match of the weekend will put Long Beach State facing No. 2 Stanford for the first time in the season. The Cardinals (2-0) returned four Olympians and have defeated No. 14 UC San Diego, 15-4 and No. 5 Hawai'i, 12-7 to start their campaign.
