Demelo Scores Late Gamewinner As LBSU Defeats UCSD 4-3

Liz Worden scores a goal and records two assists for the Beach
The Beach took advantage of an early UCSD turnover. Demelo intercepted a Triton's pass just outside the 18-yard box. She took a dribble and found Kassandra Ceja in front to break the seal 2:10 into the match. UCSD tied the game in the 15th minute when Raquel Kalpakoff headed in a Courtney Hillard corner kick.
Both teams were aggressive early, taking five shots in the first 20 minutes. Long Beach State's sixth attempt came via a Kana Uchida shot off a free kick that Bella Barretto saved in the bottom right of the net.
UC San Diego went up 2-1 in the 24th minute. Leilah sent a pass from the right side of the field towards the middle, where Kalpakoff headed the ball to Hillard. Hillard's strike went from the left to the bottom of the right.
The Beach tied the match in the 33rd minute. Long Beach State was awarded a free kick after a UCSD foul. Liz Worden's left-footed cross found Julia Moore in the six-yard box, where she headed in her second goal of the season.
Moore recorded the first shot on goal for Long Beach State in the 52nd minute. Her blast from 20 yards out came off a corner kick and was saved by Barretto. UC San Diego successfully defended the ensuing corner kick. The Tritons threatened on two of their next three offensive possessions, with LBSU goalie Aurora Schuck turning away UCSD with a pair of saves.
Worden put the Beach back in front 3-2 in the 61st minute when she headed in Kylie Perez's throw-in. LBSU looked to increase the lead in the 73rd when Perez again had a throw-in. Her toss found Kailey Supa in front, but her attempt went wide.
Lana Gilligan tied the score in the 77th minute. Natalie Abel's pass got behind the Long Beach State defense, finding Gilligan, who shot just inside the 18 for the goal. Demelo recorded an attempt in the 78th minute that the UC San Diego defense blocked. Worden's long-range blast in the 82nd minute was high for the Beach.
Demelo returned the lead to the Beach in the 83rd minute. A quick Ceja throw-in went to Worden. Worden dribbled once, passing to a rushing Demelo, who scored from 20 yards out.
The final Tritons' threat came from Skylar Enge's shot, which, with less than three minutes to play, went off a Long Beach State defender. UCSD was awarded a corner kick, which the Beach defended.
UCSD (2-8-2, 0-2-1 Big West) outshot LBSU 17-14, but the Beach held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Barretto had five saves, while Schuck made four. Long Beach State improves to 10-0-1 in the all-time series against UC San Diego. LBSU is 4-0 against UCSD since the Tritons joined the Big West in 2021.
