Johnson's Goal Sends Long Beach State Past Cornell 1-0

Aurora Schuck recorded her second clean sheet in goal for LBSU
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Malea Johnson's 51st-minute goal was the difference as Long Beach State defeated Cornell 1-0 in LBSU's final non-conference women's soccer match Friday night at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State outshot Cornell 5-1 in the first half. The Beach kept Big Red goalie Erica Fox busy as she made four saves. Johnson's attempt in the 28th minute was the closest, as her attempt came from inside the six-yard box. Makayla Demelo posted back-to-back attempts in the final five minutes to threaten for LBSU, but Fox was able to turn her away. Liz Worden's shot in the 42nd minute went off the cross bar and just bounced away for the Beach.
Kassandra Ceja set up the game-winning goal with a pass to Johnson in space. Johnson connected on a blast from 20 yards out for the freshman's first goal of the season.
Ceja looked to extend the advantage in the 71st minute as her attempt off a Julia Moore cross was saved by Fox in front. Long Beach State continued to press. In the 89th, Fox challenged Ceja as she dribbled towards the goal. As a result of the collision, Fox was whistled for a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. With 25 seconds remaining, she was replaced by Natalie Medugno.
Aurora Schuck posted her second shutout of the season, making one save on the one Big Red shot on goal. Long Beach State outshot Cornell (1-3-4) 9-4, 7-1 on goal. The Beach held a 62-38 advantage in possession and took four more corner kicks (7-3) than the Big Red.
