Ceja's Brace Leads LBSU Past UCR In Big West Opener

9/22/2024 8:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Schuck records second consecutive shutout for the Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif.--Kassandra Ceja scored twice as Long Beach State defeated UC Riverside 3-0 in the Big West women's soccer opener for both clubs Sunday night at George Allen Field.

The Highlanders threatened early as Daphane Mendez's attempt in the second minute was saved in the bottom center by LBSU goalie Aurora Schuck. Settling in, the Beach posted a pair of Liz Worden and Kana Uchida attempts that pressured the UCR defense and forced Christina Sidotti into saves.

Long Beach State took the lead in the 30th minute when Ceja headed in a Worden cross in front of the UCR net. Ceja recorded the brace in the 33rd minute. Jayla Justice fouled her in front of the UC Riverside goal and was awarded a penalty kick. Ceja converted the PK for a 2-0 lead that the Beach took into halftime.

The Highlanders moved forward early in the second half as a UCR rush resulted in a Mimi Dominguez shot that Schuck saved in the 51st minute. Worden responded on the ensuing Long Beach State possession with an attempt that Sidoti saved in the bottom center of the goal.

The persistent LBSU pressure paid off as Warden made it 3-0 in favor of LBSU in the 67th minute. She dribbled towards the UCR goal with two defenders on her and stopped just outside the 18-yard box. She went into the top right of the UC Riverside (2-8) goal. In the 82nd minute, Jordan Candelaria looked to make it 4-0 for LBSU, but her attempt just went high for the Beach.

Long Beach State outshot UCR 16-13, 9-8 on goal. Schuck recorded her second consecutive shutout as the redshirt sophomore made eight saves. Sidotia charted six saves for the Highlanders. Both teams took four corner kicks. 33 fouls were called (17 for UCR), and five yellow cards were issued (4 for the Highlanders).
