The Beach outshoot the Matadors 13-5

LONG BEACH, Calif.—CSUN defeated Long Beach State 1-0 in Big West women's soccer action Thursday night at George Allen Field.

CSUN took the lead in the sixth minute as Yoshi Rubalcava scored on a shot from the left side that went into the low right of the LBSU net. The goal was the first in 248 minutes, and the Beach did not give up a goal dating back to the Sept. 8 game in Texas.

LBSU responded with a pair of shots on the ensuing possession. The first, a Liz Worden blast, was blocked by CSUN's defense. The second, a Kassandra Ceja attempt, was saved by Matadors' goalie Riley Liebsack. Long Beach State earned their first corner in the 15th minute, which resulted in a second Ceja attempt that was blocked by CSUN.

Coming off a Matadors turnover, the Beach went on the attack. Summer Laskey sent Malea Johnson towards the net, where her shot went just high in the 17th minute. Laskey nearly tied it in the 28th. She took a Johnson pass and put it towards Liebsack, who made the kick save to turn the LBSU away.

The Matadors threatened in the 41st minute. A Sydney Lipkin set piece off a free kick went off the Long Beach State post. The rebound found Jordyn Canister, who went wide, keeping it at 1-0, the halftime score.

Early in the second half, Laskey sent a through ball towards Ceja. Liebsack challenged at the top of the 18 and returned with the possession. Liebsack saved a Makayla Demelo blast in the 53rd minute. The rebound came out to Jordan Candelaria, who saw her shot go wide. Julia Moore's shot from 20 yards out looked like it was going in the 62nd minute, but it just went high. Two minutes later, Liebsack turned Laskey back.

Long Beach State threatened in the 72nd minute when Johnson set up Ceja for a backleg kick that nearly made it in the top right of the CSUN net. The teams traded a pair of corner kicks in the final 10 minutes. The Beach was awarded a free kick with two minutes remaining, but Liebsack plucked Worden's ball out of the air.

Liebsack made five saves for CSUN (3-7-1, 1-0-1 Big West) as the Beach outshot the Matadors 13-6. LBSU held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN was whistled for 11 fouls, while Long Beach State was issued seven fouls. Both teams were booked for one yellow card each.
