AT THE START
Long Beach State returns to action Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. The women's 6000m Invitational race begins at 7:15 a.m. with the men's 8000m Invitational competition getting underway at 7:50 a.m. LBSU will also have limited entries in the women's 5000m Open race that starts at 8:25 a.m. The venerable Ag/Ops Course is the home of the 2024 Big West Championships.                                                                         Â
Scheduled to compete are Azusa Pacific, California Baptist, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Marcos, Concordia-Irvine, Fresno Pacific, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, The Master's, UNLV, Nevada, San Diego State, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Utah Tech, Vanguard, and Westmont.

THE LAST TIME OUT
Marikay Schwab won the Pepperdine Waves Invite Aug. 30 as the 2024 cross country season got underway for Long Beach State at Alumni Park.

Schwab ran a time of 13:04.0 on the 4k course to defeat second-place Nicole Bridges of Cal Poly by a little over two seconds. Schwab's win was the first individual victory by an LBSU women's runner since Ryley Fick won the 2022 UC Riverside Invitational. For her efforts, she was named Big West Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Leia Jones came in fourth in a time of 13.11.3. Allie Scimia was 12th, running 13:42.6. Jadyn Palaschuk finished 16th (14:00.5). Mackenzie Hack (14:01.8) was 17th. Brooke Willoughby placed 18th (14:05.3). Alyssa Tapanes was the final scoring Beach entry. She came in 26th (14:31.3).
Long Beach State saw three additional runners compete in Naima Salazar (34th, 14:46.9), Nataly Toledo (37th, 14:53.2), and Elani Huntley (44th, 15:28.1). Cal Poly edged the Beach in the team race. The Mustangs scored 30 points, and LBSU scored 50.

The day began with the men's race, in which the Beach finished second (49), while Cal Poly took top honors (15).
Cristian Martinez was the top finishing LBSU entry. Martinez ran 17:53.5 over the 6k course to come in seventh (scored sixth). Cameron Rhone finished eighth (scored seventh), running 17:54.0. Rhone dropped his 6k personal best by over a minute as his old PR was 18:56.4.
Levi Taylor placed 13th (scored 10th) after running 18:16.3. Taylor's time was his best over 6k by 17 seconds. Quinn Garity was 18th (scored 12th), posting 18:33.6. Garity lowered his 6k personal best by almost a minute (his previous PR was 19:09.5).
Brandon Day (30th, 19:23.0, scored 21st), and Kyle Reden (31st, 19:23.8, scored 22nd) rounded the scoring for Long Beach State. Reden reset his 6k PR by 18 seconds. Ethan Florez was the final LBSU entry. He finished 39th (20:15.5). Rory Catsimanes of Cal Poly was the individual winner (17:32.5).
