No. 16 UCI Hands The Dirtbags A 7-1 Loss

5/12/2024 4:00:00 PM | Baseball

John Newman Jr.'s first inning triple drives in the lone LBSU run.

LONG BEACH, Calif.— No. 16 UC Irvine defeated Long Beach State 7-1 Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

Taking advantage of a UCI error, John Newman Jr.'s two-out triple in the bottom of the first scored Nick Marinconz for the first Long Beach State lead of the weekend, 1-0.

Myles Smith singled to lead off the top of the third. Kellan Montgomery walked Woody Hadeen. The Big West's leading hitter (.410), Caden Kendle, walked to load the bases. Anthony Martinez cleared the bases with a double into the right field corner. Dub Gleed grounded out to second, allowing Martinez to move to third. A Montgomery 0-2 pitch hit Will Bermudez. Chase Call hit a fly ball to the warning track in left, where Justin Roulston made a leaping catch to keep the play to only one run. UCI would lead 4-1 after 2.5 as Jo Oyama lined out to right to end the inning.

Connor Charpiot's infield single opened the Dirtbags' fourth. With one out, Armando Briseno singled through the right side, advancing Charpiot to second. Alex Champagne grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop for the second out. With runners on the corners, Champagne stole second, but Roulston struck out to end the inning.

Call led off the sixth with a single through the left side. Oyama's sac bunt to third and pushed Call to second. Nathen Morris relieved Montgomery and got Abraham Garcia-Pacheco to fly out to right. Smith flew out to left for the third out.

Smith doubled to right with two outs in the top of the ninth. Grant Cherry, the third pitcher of the day for the Dirtbags, hit Hadeen. Kendle hit a three-run home run to make it 7-1.

UCI (38-10, 18-6 Big West) pitchers Tim Grack, Ricky Ojeda, and Ricky Tibbett retired the final 13 Dirtbags to end the game. The trio combined on a three-hitter.  Martinez and Kendle both charted two hits for the 'Eaters.
