LONG BEACH, Calif.- No. 7 Long Beach State dropped to No. 2 Hawaii in a battle for first in the conference 13-6 on Sunday. Elisa Portillo was the leading scorer for the Beach with three goals.

It was a defensive battle to start the game, but Hawaii jumped out to an early lead and scored four goals in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead.

Rachael Kowalchick found the back of the cage to start the second period to put the Beach on the board. Portillo worked to score her first game with one man up, Lara Luka credited with the assist. Anne de Kleer scored the third goal for the Beach, but Hawaii responded with three goals of their own to end the second period up 7-3.

Lara Luka built some momentum for the Beach as she scored the first goal of the second half on a five-meter attempt. The Beach continued to challenge Hawaii's defense as Portillo scored her second goal in the corner of the cage. The Bows matched the Beach and scored two goals of their own to keep a four point lead (9-5) headed into the final period.

Hawaii applied pressure from the sprint and scored four goals in the final period. Portillo found the cage for the third time today, but ultimately the Beach would fall 13-6.

Long Beach State are now 4-1 in conference with two more games left of the regular season. The Beach will head to UC San Diego Saturday, April 13 at Noon. Live stats for the game will be available at thefosh.net.
