Long Beach State Hits Three Home Runs
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State pitchers Kellan Montgomery and Nick Williams combined on a three-hitter as the Dirtbags defeated UC San Diego 10-1 in game two of the club's Big West baseball series Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
With one out in the top of the third, Montgomery struck out Benjamin Rosengard, but he advanced to first on a passed ball. Noah Sudyka reached on an error, allowing Rosengard to reach third. Nick Costello attempted to bunt the runners over. Montgomery fielded the ball cleanly and tossed it to John Newman Jr. at home for the second out. Montgomery struck out Michael Crossland to end the inning.
Newman Jr. led off the bottom of the fourth with his fifth home run of the year, a shot over the left-center field fence. Adrian Lopez followed with an infield single to third. Lopez stole second before Alex Champagne reached on an infield single to short, as he took third on the play. Jack Hammond walked to load the bases. Cole Santander's double to center scored two runs for a 3-0 lead. Nick Marinconz grounded into a 6-5 fielder's choice, which allowed Hammond to score. Marinconz went to second on a Zack Ernisse failed pick-off attempt and came around to score on an Armando Briseno double down the right-field line.
Champagne's one-out single in the fifth drove in Newman Jr., increasing the LBSU lead to 6-0.
Costello recorded UCSD's first hit, leading off the top of the sixth with his sixth home run of the season. Briseno increased the Dirtbags' lead once again, hitting a home run with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Montgomery gave up two hits along with one walk before being relieved by Williams to start the seventh. Brock Kelszcz reached on a one-out error before going to third on a single by pinch hitter Deishaun Lanier's base hit. Williams struck out as Lanier was thrown out by Newman Jr. trying to steal second to complete an inning-ending double play.
Newman Jr. walked to begin the bottom of the seventh. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a Champagne infield single. Hammond fouled out to first. Newman, Jr. faked a break for home, but Bradlee Preap threw home. His throw was high, allowing both runners to move up and make it 8-1.
Kyle Ashworth's two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-1. The Tritons loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth. Williams got Sudyka to pop out to short to end the game.
Montgomery struck out a career-high nine batters. The sophomore righty threw 95 pitches, 68 for strikes. Williams struck out three as he earned a three-inning save. 27 of his 51 pitchers were for strikes. Champagne and Briseno both went 3-for-4 for Long Beach State. Santander was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Newman Jr. was 1-for-2 with his home runs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
