Long Beach State will host the Big West Championship at the LBCC Sand Courts this Thursday and Friday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — The regular season will come to an exciting finish as Long Beach State will have the opportunity to host the Big West Championship Thursday and Friday at LBCC. The Beach will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament as all seven schools in the Big West compete for the title.
No. 7 Long Beach State enters the Big West Championship as the defending champions and will be one of the favorites for the title along with top seed Cal Poly and third seed, Hawai'i. The first match for the Beach will see them face Sacramento State at Noon on Thursday.
The Beach (25-7) is currently 7-2 against conference opponents, with their two losses coming against No. 4 Cal Poly (27-5) and No. 11 Hawaii (20-11). The team lost a close 3-2 match against Hawaii back at the Big West Challenge in March. Long Beach State also dropped a match against Cal Poly but had a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs during the Best in the West Tournament to even the series on the year.
The team won the Big West Championship title for the first time in program history last season and has returned most of the team from the championship run. The freshman phenoms Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah both earned 2023 Big West First Team accolades and Co-Freshman of the Year. As sophomores they are consistently playing at the first flight and hold a 22-8 record. Players returning also include Julia Westby, who was named to the Big West Second Team and Megan Widener and Natalie Glenn who garnered Big West Honorable Mentions.
