Long Beach State won their match against Sacramento State but fell to Hawai’i.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Beach won 4-1 against Sacramento State in their first match of the day but had a tough 4-1 loss to No. 11 Hawai'i.

Long Beach State (25-8) started strong as they faced Sacramento State (7-21) to start off the afternoon. The fourth flight pair of Christine Deroos and Haley Carrington held their opponents to eight points in the first set and continued their dynamic style of play to take the second set 21-9. Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah had a solid first set and went on a run in the second set to put The Beach up 2-0 in the dual. The second flight pair sealed the deal as Julia Westby and Savannah Standage also won their match in straight sets.

The second match of the day was a battle against Hawai'i (22-11). The second flight pair of Julia Westby and Savannah Standage had a slow start but were neck and neck with their opponents in the second set. They weren't able to fend off the Rainbow Wahine as Hawai'i took the first dual point. The Beach had two close sets on the fourth court but ultimately couldn't gain momentum. The third dual point was won at the first flight. The fifth flight was able to push their game to a third set after coming back to win the second set 22-20 but couldn't find their footing. The third flight pair of Natalie Glenn and Mo Gibson were the lone pair to take a game from Hawai'i as they took the first set. After dropping their second set, Natalie Glenn Mo Gibson came back swinging in the third set. Mo Gibson had a shot down the middle to end their game and steal a point for The Beach.

Long Beach State will face CSUN at 8:30 a.m. on Friday to begin the second and final day of the Big West Championship.
