Wichita State Takes Opener Against The Dirtbags

The Shockers and Long Beach State Play In Cold & Windy Conditions
WICHITA, Kan.—With a windchill in the 20's and a first-pitch air temperature of 35 degrees, Wichita State defeated Long Beach State 4-1 Friday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Jack Hammond worked out a one-out walk in the top of the second. Connor Charpiot reached on an infield single before Caden Favors, the Shockers starter, recorded his fourth and fifth strikeouts to get out of the inning. Kam During doubled with two outs in the bottom of the second. A Myles Patton pitch hit Jordan Rogers to bring up the ninth batter in the Wichita State order, Darnell Parker, Jr. Patton got up 0-2 in the count before getting Parker, Jr. to foul out to third to wrap up the frame.
Charpiot led off the top of the fifth with a walk. Adrian Lopez's single to center pushed Charpiot into scoring position at second. Alex Champagne attempted to sacrifice, but Favors fielded the ball on the mound and threw to third to get the lead runner. Nick Marinconz popped out to short before Favors struck out Ty Borgogno to conclude matters.
Rogers began the bottom of the fifth with a single up in the middle. Rogers made it to second on a LBSU passed ball. Parker, Jr. doubled to left to drive Rogers for the lead. Camden Johnson's sacrifice allowed Parker, Jr. to reach third. Long Beach State brought the infield in against Mauricio Millan, who singled up the middle to plate Parker, Jr. for a 2-0 score. Millan went to second on a Patton error on a failed pickoff attempt. Patton bounced back to strike out Dayvin Johnson. Derek Williams flew out to the warning track to keep the score 2-0.
Ryan Callahan's single began the bottom of the sixth for the Shockers. Gannon Snyder recorded the third sacrifice bunt of the game to advance Callahan to second. Patton recorded his seventh strikeout as he retired Kam Durning. Rogers reached on an infield single. Patton, who fielded the ball, threw wide of the bag, allowing the run to score. Nathen Morris relieved Patton and just missed on a 3-2 count to walk Parker, Jr. A Morris failed pickoff attempt allowed both runners to move up a base. Johnson's infield single drove in the fourth Wichita State run.
Favors struck out 10 in seven innings of work. Caleb Anderson took over in the eighth. Anderson retired the first four he faced before walking John Newman Jr. Justin Roulston ran for Newman Jr. Hammond singled to right to advance Roulston to third. Hammond took second on a Wichita State error. Charpiot singled up the middle to score Roulston as Hammond headed to third. Landon Greenhouse ran for Charpiot. Anderson steadied himself, striking out Lopez and getting Champagne to ground out to end the game.
In addition to the cold temperatures, wind gusts throughout the game were between 20 and 30 miles per hour. Rogers and Parker, Jr. combined for four of the eight Wichita State hits (two each). Charpiot was 2-for-3 to pace the Dirtbags. Patton's seven strikeouts raised his season total to 37 (in 22.1 innings) while only walking six in 2024.
