For the second time in a week, Long Beach State meets UCLA; this time, the Bruins travel down the 405 to Blair Field. ESPN+ streams Tuesday night's game at 6 p.m. with Matt Brown and Cody Yates on the call. BeachLiveStats.com will have coverage as well.
 
SCOUTING THE BRUINS
After winning their fifth game of the year last week against Long Beach State, the Bruins dropped a pair of games to Michigan and UC Irvine at the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic. UCLA is 5-5 to begin the week.
 
Cody Schriner continues to lead the team in hitting (.400). Schriner has a UCLA-high .625 slugging percentage and a .489 on-base percentage. Duce Gourson is the club leader in home runs (3) and RBI (9).
 
Righty Landon Stump is the Bruins' probable starting pitcher. He is 0-0 in four appearances in 2024 and is making his second start of the campaign. He has struck out 10 while walking two in 8.2 innings.
 
AGAINST THE OPPONENT
UCLA defeated the Dirtbags 12-11 in 10 innings on Feb. 28 in Los Angeles. Long Beach State and the Bruins have played 122 times, with UCLA leading the all-time series 73-49.
 
HITTING 21
Led by Myles Patton, who struck out a career-high 13, seven Long Beach State pitchers struck 21 Milwaukee batters on Mar. 1 in Long Beach.
 
The 21 strikeouts ties LBSU with George Washington (vs. UMBC on Feb. 27) for the sixth most in a game by a Division I club this season.
 
The Dirtbags pitching staff has struck out 122 in 101.2 innings this season while only walking 31.
 
Long Beach State begins the week 16th in Division I in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.34) and 22nd in strikeouts per nine innings (11.4).
 
Myles Patton begins the week eighth in D-1 in strikeouts (30), while Kellan Montgomery is 105th (19).
 
In addition to their strikeout totals, Montgomery and Patton are off to a strong start this season. Montgomery is 14th in strikeout-to-ratio (19.00), 15th in walks allowed per nine innings (0.5), 24th in WHIP (0.67), and 50th in ERA (1.00).
 
Patton is 98th in strikeout-to-walk ratio140th in ERA (2.16). Both are tied for ninth in games started (30)
 
Riding the wave of the strikeouts, the pitching staff is 10th in Division in WHIP (1.10), 11th in hits allowed per nine innings (6.86), and 12th in earned run average (3.01).
