3 Dirtbags Pitchers Combine On A Five Hitter; LBSU Sweeps Milwaukee

The Dirtbags Defeated the Panthers On Sunday 6-0
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Three Long Beach pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the Dirtbags completed a series sweep of Milwaukee 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Milwaukee posted three hits in the top of the first, including a single from Justin Hausser that Gabe Roessler attempted to score on. Dirtbags right fielder Kyle Ashworth came up throwing and erased Roessler at home to end the inning.
John Newman Jr. put the Dirtbags into the lead with his second home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
CJ Hood, the Dirtbags' starter, retired seven in a row before walking Q Phillips with two outs in the top of the sixth. With the count 2-1 on Zach Lane, Phillips stole second. Hood battled back, getting Phillips to fly out to center for the final out.
Nolan Funke walked to lead off the Long Beach State seventh. With one out, Funke advanced to second on a Riley Peterson wild pitch. Newman Jr walked. The third Panther pitcher of the game, Keagon Kaufmann, came on to face Jack Hammond. Hammond singled to right center to drive in Funke.
Hammond stole his team leading seventh base before Connor Charpiot singled to left to drive in both Neman Jr. and Hammond. Adrian Lopez hit his third home run in his last four games, a two-run blast to left center to make it 6-0 in favor of Long Beach State.
Hood shut out the Panthers (0-9) for six innings. He allowed only one more hit over his final five innings and struck out three. Nick Williams entered and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning before giving way to Owen Geiss in the eighth. Geiss retired the first two Panthers of the inning before allowing a Luke Smock single. Geiss hit Roessler. He bounced back to get Dallan Quigley to bounce into a 4-6 fielder's choice for the third out. Geiss retired the Panthers in order in the ninth for the win.
Charpiot was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and a run scored. Newman Jr. scored twice.
Long Beach State (8-1-1) hosts UCLA (5-4) Tuesday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
