Rhona Cook Leads Long Beach State To Exciting 4-3 Victory Over Dartmouth

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A thrilling battle between Long Beach State and Dartmouth came down to the top singles flight as senior Rhona Cook led the Beach to an exciting 4-3 win over the Big Green on Thursday at Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach (8-5) have now won four of their last five matches. Meanwhile, the Big Green (6-7) have lost their last two contests.
Long Beach State got the match going by securing the doubles point. The Beach did a solid job claiming flights one and three by identical 6-4 wins to clinch the point.
In singles action, the Big Green was quick to tie the match at 1-1 as Katie Weber came away with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Paulina Franco Martinessi. Dartmouth then took a 2-1 lead over LBSU as Lexi Dewire defeated Peppi Ramstedt, 6-4, 6-4 at flight three.
Doga Akyurek turned in a solid performance at court five as she took down Brook Hess, 6-3, 7-6, to even the match at 2-2.
Justine Dondonay battled it out with Michela Moore at flight two. Dondonay took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second 6-0. Fighting hard for the go-ahead point, Dondonay earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory to put the Beach on top 3-2.
Over on court four, Sarah Medik was in a battle of her own with Elizabeth Fahrmeier. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Medik fought back and won the second set 7-6 (6) to force a third. The two traded points back and forth, but ultimately Fahrmeier came away with the 6-4 win to tie the match at 3-all.
With the match knotted at 3-3, it all came down to the top flight where Cook and Peyton Capuano were in a hard-fought battle. Cook had earned a 7-6 (4) win in the first set, and Capuano had taken the second, 7-5. With the match reaching the four-hour mark and both teams gathered to watch the final set, Cook clinched the match with a 6-3 victory as her teammates ran onto the court to celebrate.
Long Beach State will battle another Ivy League school in Brown next Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
