No. 9 Long Beach State Goes 2-0 At Claremont Convergence

Hailey Multz with career-high six goals in win over Mount St. Mary’s.
ORANGE, Calif.- No. 9 Long Beach State women's water polo picked up two wins over Mount St. Mary's and No. 22 Long Island to go undefeated at the Claremont Convergence. Mariah Walker led all Beach players with nine total goals on the day and Hailey Multz scored a personal career-high six goals.
In the first game of the day, the Beach came away with a dominant win over Mount St. Mary's 21-8. Six different players found the back of the cage, as sophomore Hailey Multz scored a career-high with six goals.
The first half of the quarter, both sides exchanged shots before the first goal of the game was scored by Martina Cardona at 3:36. Multz and Mariah Walker add two more to the scoreboard to end the first quarter up 3-2.
Mount St. Mary's had a couple early goals to start the second quarter, but the Beach responded with five goals of their own. Anne de Kleer started to heat up and score two goals of her own. Two more goals from Multz and Walker gave the Beach a four point lead headed into halftime.
Both teams exchanged goals throughout the third quarter. Lara Luka scored on the five-meter attempt and Rachael Kowalchick found the net with one man up for their first goals of the game. Walker scored on back-to-back plays and Multz scored her third goal of the game to take a 13-7 lead at the end of the third.
The Beach dominated the fourth quarter as the offense scored eight goals and the defense held the Mount to only one goal. de Kleer scored two goals in the first two minutes of the final quarter before Luka added another one. Multz continued her strong play as she scored three more goals to secure the Beach win 21-8.
The Beach soared past No. 22 Long Island 13-9 in their second game of the day after a second half comeback and Walker's five goals helped to secure the win.
Long Island struck first with two early goals to start the game. Walker responded with two goals of her own in response. Two goals from LIU and one from de Kleer left the Beach down by one after the first period. Long Island started off with another early goal, but Walker was on fire and found the back of the cage for two more goals. The Beach headed into halftime down two points.
The Beach found some fire in the second half as they outscored Long Island 8-2. It started with Walker as she scored her fifth goal of the game early in the third quarter. Four different Beach players found the back of the net to take a 10-8 lead into the final quarter. As both sides exchanged shots, Luka scored her second and third goal of the game to increase the Beach lead. Elisa Portillo added one more and the Beach defense prevailed to take the win 13-9.
Luka added five goals on the day, bringing her season total to 50 goals. Chelsea Olivier was steady behind the cage today as she made 16 total saves in the two matches.
