Long Beach State softball opened Big West action with a series win on the road.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – One swing was the difference for Long Beach State on Sunday as Rebekah Durazo's early home run held the whole way behind a Sophia Fernandez complete game as the Beach defeated UC Riverside 3-1.
In the top of the first, Makayla Medellin sparked a two-out rally with a single, and after a walk to Sinclair Lawhorn, Rebekah Durazo gave Long Beach State (6-22, 2-1 Big West) an early 3-0 lead.
Long Beach State would only get one more hit against UC Riverside (7-16, 1-2 Big West) pitching, but even so, that was plenty for Fernandez who picked up the win in her fourth complete game of the season. Fernandez scattered four hits, and only allowed one run.
Gigi Araki doubled to start the bottom of the third, and after a single by Lauren Garewhal, an RBI groundout scored the only run of the game for the Highlanders. Fernandez picked up a fly out to the end the inning, and then only allowed one more hit, setting down 11 straight batters to close out the victory for the Beach.
Sunday's win completed a series win for the Beach, who split the first two games of the series. The Beach will host California Baptist Wednesday night in non-conference action before their league home opener with CSUN on the weekend.
