The Beach remain undefeated at home after another dominant weekend of play.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — No. 7 Long Beach State ended their stint at home with a pair of 5-0 victories over Nebraska and CSUN.
The Beach (14-2) swept Nebraska (16-11) to start the day. Long Beach State was in control of the match on every court during the first set. The first four flights all took their opponents in straight sets. The fifth flight of Sammy Okano and Abby Karich dropped their second set and had to battle in the third. The set was back and forth until 14-14. Abby Karich had a swing that stunned Nebraska and the duo was able to complete the sweep for Long Beach. Both Karich and Okano picked up their first win for the Beach.
The second match of the day against CSUN (9-6) also featured a different lineup than normal. The sophomore duo Malia Gementera and Taylor Haganah continued their strong start to the season at the first flight, going 4-0 on the weekend. They had a quick win, 21-11, 21-16, to grab the first dual point for Long Beach State. The second flight duo of Westby and Glenn was unstoppable as they powered through two quick sets as well to finish their match next. The duo of Megan Widener and Christine Deroos moved up to the third flight and handled their opponents with no problem to secure the win for Long Beach.
The fourth flight featured Kate Stoughton and Emily Sparks battle against the Matadors early on but once they found their rhythm they took their opponents in straight sets. All eyes were on the fifth flight after the Beach dropped the second set. Gabby Reinking and Jaylen Jordan went on a run to start the third set and never looked back. They both picked up their first collegiate win on the sand and gave Long Beach their second sweep of the day.
No. 7 Long Beach State will head up to Sacramento for the Big West Challenge this weekend, where they'll face all of their conference opponents.
