The Beach Program earns two of the top three MPSF awards

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State's Hailey Fune' repeated as MPSF Women's Athlete of the Year as LBSU Director of Track and Field Andy Sythe was named MPSF Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, the league announced on Mar. 1.

Fune' scored 28 points for the Beach as Long Beach State won its first MPSF title on Feb. 26. She defended her conference pentathlon title with a school record and NCAA No. 45-ranked five-event total of 3,889. The Chico, Calif. native added a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.35; a then-school record 8.30 during the prelims), as well as fourth-place results in the long jump (5.82m/19-1 1/4) and high jump (1.68m/5-6). Within her record-setting pentathlon, Fune' collected lifetime bests in two events; shot put (11.08m/36-4 1/4, third place) and long jump (5.80m/19-0 1/2, second place).

CSUN's Trey Knight was named MPSF Men's Athlete of the Year.

Sythe led the Beach men and women to their first-ever MPSF Championship, marking the fifth time in the 31 years of the event that the team titles were swept by one school. Long Beach State won a conference-high 10 of the 34 total MPSF titles, seven for the men and three for the women. In addition to Fune', Rahni Turner broke the program record in the women's 60-hurdles (8.25) in the finals of the event. The LBSU men swept the jumps with Elijah Harris' long jump, Novye' James' triple jump, Kyle Jankans' high jump, and Cyprus Rice's pole vault. 2024 marks the first time in Sythe's career that he has been named MPSF Coach of the Year.
