Softball Loses Final Two Games At Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

Long Beach State will host Michigan in the team’s home opener on Wednesday.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – A solo home run from Carly Robbins gave the Beach the lead against Fresno State, but the Bulldogs rallied to defeat the Beach, giving LBSU two losses on the day after an earlier defeat to No. 21 California.

                No. 21 California (15-1) continued their hot play in the opening game of the day against Long Beach State (1-13). A pair of bases loaded walks in the first inning gave the Golden Bears a quick lead in the first inning.

                Long Beach State loaded the bases themselves in the second as Rebekah Durazo, Lilyanna Martinez and Malayna Terrones all walked, but the Beach couldn't capitalize on the threat. Cal added three runs in the third before the Beach put together another threat behind back-to-back singles from Jaeden Barajas and Martinez. Cal got out of the inning behind starter Randi Roelling, and closed out the win with a three-run bottom of the sixth to end the game early at 8-0.

                The Beach had a pair of early leads in the second game of the day against Fresno State. In the top of the second, Mikayla Cebellos started off the inning with a leadoff walk. A fielder's choice put Martinez aboard, and then senior came all the way around to score on a Jacquelyn Bickar double to put the Beach on top 1-0.

                The Bulldogs pushed around a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, but the Beach went back on top after a solo home run from Junior Carly Robbins, her first of the season.

                A two-run home run from Alyssa Martinez put the Bulldogs in front for the first time in the contest in the fourth inning with a 3-2 edge, and Fresno State added three crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on the way to handing the Beach a 6-2 defeat.

                Long Beach State will host Michigan on Wednesday in the team's home opener under the lights at the LBSU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
