Long Beach State beat No. 19 Pepperdine at their home courts for the first time in program history.
MALIBU, Calif. — No. 10 Long Beach State started the season with a pair of wins in Malibu, cruising past Vanguard with a 5-0 win before an impressive 5-0 win on the road against No. 19 Pepperdine.
The Beach started their day with a dominant performance to win against Vanguard. The first flight saw Standage playing in her first game for the Beach. She and Julia Westby put on a skilled performance to hold Vanguard to only five points in the first set. Christine Deroos and Megan Widener also would hold Vanguard to five points in the first set. The second was just as impressive, with Deroos getting a cross court hammer to finish the game. The pair of Haley Carrington and Livi Narancich would be the dual winning point. The team went on to take all courts in straight sets.
The match against Pepperdine was a battle from the beginning. Deroos/Widener and Westby/Standage were both down 9-12 at the technical timeout. Both teams were able to come back and win the first set. Westby/Standage dropped the second set after multiple long rallies from Meyers/Perez. The duo started the second set with a 4-0 run but Pepperdine was able to quickly tie it up. The game was back and forth until the very end. A serve by Standage that just tagged the line gave the Beach the momentum they needed to finish the third set 16-14 to put them up 2-0 in the dual.
Carrington and Narancich were once again the deciding dual point after two back and forth sets. The duo was able to pull away towards the end of each set to secure the third and winning dual point. Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah also started out the season winning both of their games. The dynamic duo have earned their place on the first court to start the season. Gibson, who also played in their first match for the Beach, had a dominant first set with Glenn. Both players were getting clean kills through the first set. Pepperdine was able to bounce back with their defense for a close second set but the Beach continued to hit hard and finished the day with another win.
The Beach will be back in action next weekend for the Battle of LA. This tournament will see them take on two Top 5 opponents on their home courts.
