Long Beach State falls to No. 3 USC but came back to win against Concordia.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — No. 9 Long Beach State played hard in close sets against USC but ultimately lost the match 5-0. They fought for victory in their second match of the day against Concordia.
Savannah Standage and Julia Westby started out strong by taking a close first set from the Trojans. The match continued to be back and forth as the Trojans took the second set. The duo of Deroos and Widener lost a close first set but came back to win the second set. They would take the Trojans far past 15 points in the third set. Both courts battled in the third set but ultimately lost. The pair of Carrington and Narancich also had a set far past the 21 point mark. Their first set was a close battle until the pair of Thomas and Radell pulled away at the last few points. The second set was again close but the pair fell 22-20, which was the winning dual point for the Trojans.
The second match of the day was earned through four courts of straight set wins for the Beach. Deroos and Widener went on a run to end the first set and continued their momentum throughout the second set. Stoughton and Sparks also had momentum that led to an easy win over their opponent. They were the match winning court as the others wrapped up. Gibson and Glenn also took their opponents after two close sets that they were able to keep control of. Hagenah and Gementera were the only pair to go to a third set after losing a tight first set and coming back for a dominant performance in the second. They would go on to win 15-8 in the third set for the Beach to complete the sweep.
The Beach will continue play at the Battle for LA tomorrow against No. 2 UCLA and Washington.
