Santander's 2-Out, 2-RBI Double In The Eighth Was The Gamewinner
LONG BEACH, Calif.— Cole Santander's two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth completed a late comeback for Long Beach State as the Dirtbags defeated the University of Washington 3-2 Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the top of the first when AJ Guerrero's sacrifice fly plated Cam Clayton. Washington loaded the bases with one out. Kyle Fossum's check swing on a 2-2 Myles Patton pitch was ruled a strike, bringing up Colton Bower. Bower worked the count to 3-2 against Patton before walking to drive in a run. Carson Ohland struck out to end the inning.
Ty Borgogno singled up the middle to begin the Dirtbags' first. He advanced to second on a Calvin Kirchoff wild pitch and moved to third on a Kyle Ashworth ground out. Santander drove in Borgogno with a ground out to third.
Patton hit Clayton to begin the fifth. With one out, Aiva Arquette reached on an infield single. Patton struck out Guerrero for his 10th of the night to record the second out. At 88 pitches through 4.2 innings, the lefty Patton was relieved by the righty Nick Wallerstedt to face a righthanded hitter in Sam DeCarlo. DeCarlo, a high school teammate of Patton, flew out to left to conclude matters.
Sam Boyle relieved Kirchoff to begin the bottom of the sixth, and he made it nine in a row for the Huskies before he issued a two-out walk to Ashworth. Boyle responded by striking out Santander to quiet the LBSU threat. Connor Charpiot doubled down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Collins popped out to right before Adrian Lopez struck out to end the frame.
Borgogno was hit by a Boyle pitch with two outs in the eighth. Boyle hit Ashworth down 2-0 in the count, bringing up Santander with the tying run in scoring position. Josh Emanuels relieved Boyle. On a 3-1 pitch, Santander doubled to the gap in left-center to drive in both runners for the game-winning hit.
Mike Villani came on to try to close it out for the Dirtbags. He struck out Bower on three pitches. Villani battled back from being down 3-0 in the count to Luke Rohleder to get the senior to line out to center. On the 10th pitch of his at-bat, Blake Wilson grounded out to short to end the game.
The Long Beach State bullpen (Wallerstedt, Jonathan Largaespada, Nick Williams, and Villani) needed only 56 pitches to get through 4.1 innings of no-hit ball. The five Dirtbags on the hill recorded 13 strikeouts (10 by Patton) and walked four (one by the bullpen). Both teams recorded four hits as Long Beach State improved to 2-0 while the Huskies fell to 0-2.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon with the action beginning on ESPN+ at 1 p.m.
