Kameron Bacon led a strong blocking defense in LBSU’s loss to Hawaii

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In their Big West home opener, Long Beach State dropped a 3-0 [17-25, 16-25, 19-25] to Hawaii on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (9-5, 3-1 Big West) led the Rainbow Wahine (9-5, 3-1 Big West) in blocking defense, 11-7, but were unable to convert offensively as they hit .062 on the night to the Bows' .265.

Senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon led the defense with seven blocks as she put up two solo stops and five block assists. She also chipped in four kills. Also contributing on blocking defense was sophomore Ella Lomigora who posted four blocks.

Freshman opposite Madi Maxwell finished the match with a team-leading seven kills, while adding five digs, one block, and one assist.

Senior setter Zayna Meyer dished out 19 assists to go along with three blocks, two kills, and two digs.

Senior outside hitter logged eight digs in the back row, while registering five kills and two blocks. Joining her in anchoring the defense were senior libero Jenna Giambi and Maxwell who each tallied five digs.

The match began close as the conference foes traded points early in the first set. However, a 6-0 Hawaii run would put the Bows up 17-13 over the Beach. From that point, UH led the rest of the way taking the first set 25-17.

Hawaii used a 6-0 run in the second set as well to jump out in front (7-1) of the Beach. The Bows held their early lead as they controlled the match the rest of the frame. Despite putting together a few 3-0 runs, the Beach was unable to get back in the game as they fell to Hawaii, 25-16.

The third and final set was much like the first two as Hawaii pulled ahead after scoring six-straight points (8-5). The Bows led the Beach, 18-11, as LBSU called a timeout. The Beach came out of the break and scored three consecutive points to make it a four-point game (20-16). But that was as close as they would get as Hawaii went on to win, 25-19.

Caylen Alexander led the Bows with a double-double (18 kills, 10 digs), while setter Kate Lang added a double-double of her own (36 assists, 15 digs).

Long Beach State returns to action as they take on CSUN in Northridge, Calif., on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
