Long Beach State Splits Contests on Day Two of Triton Invitational

The Beach finish the tournament at 3-1 as they continue their season next weekend at the Inland Empire Classic
LA JOLLA, Calif—No. 9 Long Beach State men's water polo concluded play at the 2023 Triton Invitational with a loss to No. 20 Navy and a win against Pomona-Pitzer.
The opening game with Navy was a hard-fought battle, but the Beach ultimately fell by a score of 10-9. Riley Catino and Marc Frigola got things started for the Beach early on giving them a 2-0 lead, but the Midshipmen bounced back to tie the game at the end of the quarter. Navy kept that momentum going in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive goals before responses from Robert Lopez Duart and Botond Hajdu. The Beach responded well in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals of their own from Lopez Duart and Bruno Chiappini. The two teams traded goals during the fourth quarter, but Navy would score the winner with just two seconds left in the game.
Long Beach State finished the day with a dominant 26-8 win against Pomona-Pitzer. Nine different players found the back of the cage, with Robert Lopez Duart leading the way with six goals. Riley Catino followed with five goals, while Bruno Chiappini and Nikola Jancic each scored four goals. Long Beach State controlled the game from start to finish, but dominated the fourth quarter where the outscored the Sagehens 8-0.
Long Beach State's season continues next weekend when they compete in the Inland Empire Classic. The Beach will play in four games beginning with Claremont on Saturday at 9a.m.
