Men’s Water Polo Falls to UC San Diego in Tough Overtime Battle

Long Beach State will continue their season this Saturday with three games.
LA JOLLA, Calif.—No. 8 Long Beach State's five-game win streak came to an end on Thursday as they fell to No. 14 UC San Diego in overtime, 11-10. The Beach came up just short in a back-and-forth affair that saw six different players score in the loss.
Goals were hard to come by in the first quarter for both teams, but Guillermo Ocasio was able to find the back of the cage with 3:41 left in the quarter. However, Long Beach State would head into the second quarter down 3-1. Two quick goals from Alexander Makshanoff and Evan Cain evened the score at three, and then the two teams traded goals. Cain would add a second, while Riley Catino also scored two, but a late UC San Diego goal gave them a 7-6 lead headed into halftime.
The second half was another hard-fought battle between the two teams as they both continued to trade goals. UC San Diego closed the third quarter and opened the fourth quarter with goals to give them a two-goal lead, but Caleb Francisco would pull one back before Evan Cain would find the equalizer with :51 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately for the Beach, UC San Diego was able to score the winning goal with 2:39 lef tin the overtime period.
Evan Cain led the way with a strong game where he scored and assisted three goals. Defensively for the Beach, Robert Lopez Duart and Riley Catino each had three steals, while Liam Ward had a solid performance in goal with 14 saves.
Long Beach State's season continues this Saturday as they return home to play at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for the first time this season. They will play three games starting with Long Beach City College at 10 a.m., followed by Biola at noon, and No. 16 Brown at 6 p.m. Live stats for all three games will be available at theFOSH.net, and the 6 p.m. game against Brown will be streamed live on ESPN+.
